Tuuru Mission

Tuuru Mission

COTTOLENGO TUURU MISSION is a centre of health, rehabilitation, educational, social, welfare and pastoral services aimed at the poor population of the entire Meru District, north east of Kenya.

The Cottolenghina presence began in 1972, with a group of 5 sisters who received from the hands of the consolatine Sisters the “torch” of service to children affected by poliomyelitis.

The “mission” of the Centre is to take care of all poor and abandoned people, especially children with disabilities and women, so that, by having an experience of love and attention, everyone feels loved children of God and shares in His family and in the whole human family.

Currently the Mission includes

The Parish “S. Teresa of the Child Jesus “

The Cottolenghino Monastery “Jesus Priest”

The Cottolenghini Sisters and Priests Communities

Two operational realities that integrate and complement each other: Tuuru Home for Children and Tuuru Cottolengo Health Center

Tuuru and Surroundings

Tuuru and Surroundings

Tuuru is a very extensive village on a large volcanic hilly area, at the edge of the Nyambeni forest, located at the foot of the Mount Kenya mountain range, at 1800 meters. in height.

It is part of the Meru district; from this city it is 66 km, while from the capital Nairobi it is 400 km. The Tuuru territory, exclusively rural, is arid and poor; only in the rainy season do they cultivate the soil, but the harvest is always scarce. The whole area has a low demographic density, the population, of about 50,000 inhabitants, is made up mainly of women and children who live in a situation of real poverty, not only economic but also cultural and social.

It is a population with few resources but eager for improvement and willing to collaborate for their development. The sanitary and hygienic situation is precarious; the widespread diseases: malaria, typhus, HIV, bronchopneumonia, intestinal infections, tuberculosis, anemia, skin infections… are the consequence of malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of adequate care.
