On Monday, August 1, 2022, His grace Bishop Salesius Mugambi lead a mass in preparation for the beatification of Maria Carola Cecchin, a Cottolengo missionary sister who worked in Kenya at the early years of evangelisation. The event which was held at St. Michael Retreat Centre in Meru Diocese saw the participation of numerous Cottolengo Sisters, Brothers, and Fathers alongside other religious and priests from the Diocese of Meru.
In his homily, Bishop Salesius underlined the dimension of sacrifice entailed in the christian life, which Sister Maria Carola lived heroically. He noted that the servant of God lived in a way to “make others feel that there is God who cares for them.” In order to do that, we are invited “to give up personal interests” and live in the awareness of the “needs of others, not just those far, but above all those need our help“.
While noting that many talk of bearing the personal cross when in pain, the leader of the Church in Meru explained that “bearing the Cross is more than withstanding pain. It is giving up one’s life for others“, letting “something die in us so that it might live in others“.
Bishop Salesius further thanked the Cottolengo family for giving this bit of the history of faith in Tigania where Sister Maria Carola Cecchin worked, in the diocese and in the church as a whole. Many would have not known about here were it not for the process of beatification of the future blessed. “She is in our history“, the bishop underlined.
During the occassion, the people of God and well-wishers presented their contribution for the success of the singular event scheduled for November 5, 2022, to presided over by His Eminence Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, O.F.M. Cap, the Archbishop of Kinshasa.
